$50 Bison Sampler Giveaway!
Squid, sure. Tripe, why not. Bison? You betcha. My kids love to try new flavors and foods (me too!) so I’m happy to announce that High Plains Bison will be offering a $50 meat sampler to one lucky MKES reader. If you’ve ever snacked on bison jerky or maybe even a bison burger, you know this would be fun to cook up bison dogs, indulge in a bison filet mignon. Okay, now I’m getting hungry and it’s only 9am!
But before you skip ahead to figure out how to enter, I’ve got to point out a few things I learned about bison when I was getting ready for this giveaway–I promise, you’ll be impressed it involves a certain Oscar-winning actor and a large, hairy beast. I’ve got your attention now, right?
First, the good stuff–bison meat is packed with protein (okay, you probably figured that one out) but with less fat than beef, chicken, even salmon.
Now for a little trivia you can share with your kids–bison meat is completely different from buffalo. A whole species apart (not to mention an ocean). So you know that scene in Dances with Wolves where Kevin Costner has his fingers pointed to make little horns and he’s trying to learn Lakota? Yup, he should have been saying, “Tatanka? Bison?” I guess buffalo sounded a lot better and most folks still think of bison as buffalo (myself included until about a week ago!).
So here’s the deal, share with MKES a favorite food you’ve either been meaning to try or something you’ve tried out recently for the first time. My take–I sampled pork belly at a tasting event a couple weeks ago. I didn’t expect to like it with a name like pork belly–but I should have known that something with hints of bacony crispiness and a smoky vibe would be delicious.
What have you tried lately? The winner will be chosen at random August 12th.
*Note: the giveaway can only be sent to a U.S. locale. Sorry kiwis!

About a year ago I had alligator as an appetizer. It was fried and there was a dipping sauce. I didn’t hate it, but wasn’t blown away, either.

Apart from bison, another food I’ve been meaning to try is elk – I’ve heard that prepared properly both can have you licking your chops from ear to ear!

I tried japenese food! I’m VERY picky, and as I wouldn’t eat it for a whole meal, I did eat a few pieces. I forgot what it was called, I just remember the word General in it, and it was chicken!

Bison? Are you kidding – it has at least 10 times more flavorful and 100 times less filled with un-natural BAD things than beef (as we know it…)
As one who still (but has at least TRIED repeatedly!) doesn’t much care for ORGAN MEATS (except for chopped liver with a 10 to one ratio of sauteed onions and chopped HB eggs to chicken livers…) And we have been eating sushi (and cerviche/serviche) for as long as I can remember -
AND (last but not least, YES! We do all eat Squid – prepared any which way – including RAW – as in the above mentioned way and when cooked – as little as possible.
I WOULD Twitter about you Kristen, but I don’t Tweet – but I will look into your other blog – I so admire people like you who know and appreciate BOTH food/cooking AND writing/editing – and have at least a passing familiarity with everything in between! Keep up all the good works and write on!

In Louisiana we eat some strange things..Squirrel, Rabbit, Crawfish, Alligator, etc… However, recently I tried Elk, which is obviously not something we can hunt here. It was interesting, I find it kind of strong for my taste buds.
Thank you for the entry, we would love to try Bison as well!

I had emu pastrami yesterday for lunch! Man, it was good, I encourage anyone who comes across it to try it.
Something I WANT to try? Rattlesnake. There’s a festival close by that has a rattlesnake vendor. But nobody will ever try it with me. Maybe this year I’ll go by myself!

emu pastrami sounds so cool where were you eating?

I REALLY want to try scallops. I haven’t ventured much into seafood aside from lobster, crab and shrimp. I also would like to try venison. I heard it’s great, but I can’t seem to get bambi out of my head LOL.

Brain sandwiches. In Evansville IN there is a festival coming up that is called the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival. It’s a charity event for a lot of their local organizations and they sell a lot of food. I never heard of brain sandwiches until I went to the Fall Festival and had to try one. It was delicious, so if you’re ever in Southern Indiana when the festival is going on, it is a must do, must eat thing.
