Brownie stuffed oranges
This idea comes right from Cooking for Geeks, which has been a hit at our house. Thank you, Jeff Potter!
Oranges + Brownie Batter = Yum. That’s it!
Well not quite. Here’s how we did it.
- Prepare your favorite brownie batter. (Add lots of Ghirardelli chocolate chips.)
- Cut 3 oranges in half. (I used the extra brownie batter to fill an 8×8″ pan).
- Hollow out each orange until you reach the white interior (if you don’t get quite to the white part, no worries, more orange flavoring in your chocolate!).
- Place the orange halves on a shallow baking dish.
- Fill the orange pieces half way up with batter (don’t fill to the top since the brownies will grow).
- Bake as directed in your brownie recipe. The orange brownies will take slightly longer to cook.
- Eat happily!

This is a really unique idea – I’d never thought of baking brownies in fruit. The possibilities are endless. Cranberry crumble in a baked pumpkin? Mmmmmmmmm.

You think like I do–what about key lime pie-like filling in limes? I’m going on the hunt at my grocers for ideas. What about in a coconut shell?

How orangey did the brownies taste? I love the idea, but would be disappointed if the brownies didn’t have a good orange kick.

They don’t have a huge orange kick, then again my hubby did a great job getting all of the orange insides out. You could leave more in so that there was more or an orange flavor. Or probably more reliable, make an orange sauce from the insides you’ve scooped.

great photo of your kids, and I agree, this sounds great. I’ve had, and made, really good food baked within a pumpkin and several sorts of winter squash, but had not thought doing that with fruit. look forward to your further adventures with the idea.

Absolutely amazing. I never would have thought of this, but it sounds delicious. And agree the possibilities of other fruit pans/tins is endless.

What I want to know is what you did with the insides or did I miss that? How about mixing them in the blender for the kids to drink while making the brownies?

That’s a great idea Alexandra. The kids took bits from a bowl I had next to the batter. You could definitely make a drink–I’m thinking you could even blend up the insides to put into the batter. Hmmmm, I’ll have to try that next time.
