The other day my daughter desperately wanted her tooth to come out. She wiggled it. Pulled at it. She even went digging for dental floss to try the whole attach-it-to-the-door-and-slam technique. (Does that ever work? Really?) I gave her a different idea: eat whole foods. Apples. Carrots. Pears. Biting away at fruits and vegetables, I More >

When I picked up the phone this afternoon at first I thought something was wrong. On the other end, my mother-in-law just didn’t sound like herself. When I asked what was up, I had to laugh at her response: “Kris, I finally tried Nutella today. It was a-m-a-zing.” Even though she spent part of her More >

Muffins are my comfort food. So this week as the temperatures dipped into the teens and the snow finally came rolling in (it’s still a blur of white outside the window), I decided to play around with the ingredients of an apple muffin recipe I’ve had since high school. The original recipe calls for mixing More >

I saved my favorite bistro pizza recipe for last. Layered with tart apples and a hardy cheese, this pizza was inspired by one of my favorite snack combos, Cortland apple slices with either sharp New York cheddar cheese or whatever strong cheese I had on hand, Fontinella, Fontina, Gruyere, even Parmesan works. A few things More >

Warm peach slices with a crumbly, buttery filling, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream was a summertime tradition growing up. Of course, I’ve got to continue that one! When I see peaches at the grocery store or farmers’ markets, I figure it’s peach crisp baking time. And I like to take it one More >

After finding each of my kids digging through the freezer looking for the yogurt popsicles I made last week (they’re all gone), I thought I’ve gotta to make more of these. But instead of yogurt I poked around the kitchen for ideas. My inspiration? Yet again leftovers, along with some candy-making molds from a friend. More >

Fruit leathers are so easy to make I wish I would have tried ‘em sooner! I looked through recipe after recipe to figure out my own version. Here’s what I wanted: 1)No cooking 2)No sugar (I like ‘em tart) 3)Fast Here’s what I learned: 1)Part of the reason you have to cook the fruit beforehand More >

These are the most peanutty cookies I’ve ever made–or tasted. This recipe comes courtesy of the Koeze company. 1.5 million pounds. That’s how much peanut butter, and peanut butter products, we consume here in the U.S. each year. And I couldn’t be happier about it. I heart peanut butter. Seriously, I was one of those kids who had a daily dose of PB sandwiches (forget the jelly!). Since March is National Peanut Month, More >

Usually I don’t even notice when March Madness comes and goes. But this year all three of my kids are not only playing basketball but hungry for any and all things basketball, NCAA tournaments fit right in. In honor of Ohio State’s recent big win, I just had to make Buckeye brownies. I ran across More >

That’s easy…ice cream. Lots of it.

Mmmmm. I used to love ice cream but these days it gives me a tummy ache so I don’t eat it. So I get my sweet tooth fix from straight chocolate instead.

Cucumbers! Bring two halves and they stay cool and are a perfect refreshing pick-me-up for kids. In my humble opinion that is.

Cold cucumbers with a little ranch dressing, tomatoes and of course, ice cream. Love me some sherbert!

My kids always hated apples with lemon juice, complaining it was too sour, so this never worked for us. Oranges were always a good on the go food for us. I would peel them at home and put them in the bag in sections so everyone could just grab a piece.

Ooo, I love cucumbers for cooling down too. I prefer the English ones–a little softer, sweeter.

I wonder, do your kids like sour candies and such? Mine do so the sourness of lemon is a big hit–and a lot better for them!

I never thought of apples and lemon, but it sounds great. Is there a variety of apple you particularly like for this?

Berries. Cold, cold berries keep me from losing my mind in the summer (and from eating too much chocolate).

I love popsicles on a warm day!
Have you tried sunbutter or almond butter instead of PB? I hear it’s a little better for you, and I like the taste of sunbutter but not sure if it’s as kid-friendly.

Lovely idea with the apples in lemon juice. Nuts and granola/dried fruit are usually my go-to travel snacks.

watermelon salsa is pretty refreshing on a scorching day.

I like the apples and lemon juice — and the lemons and peanut butter too. another thing that’s a hit here is fresh peaches — sliced and eaten out of hand, or frozen first.

Yes, the peaches are so good right now. I’ve also discovered several new-to-me varieties of apricots this year.

I’ll have to try that. Watermelon in salsa sounds like a perfect combo.

I’ve tried almond butter but not sunbutter–made out of sunflowers, right? I’ll have to look for it.

Lately, my favorite has been Braeburn–I don’t like the apples to be too sweet. I also like Empire and occasionally Gala.

Definitely mint chocolate chip ice cream. But I also love cold watermelon, peaches and grapes. And non-fat frozen yogurt with blueberries.

When we are out and about we tend to stop at local fruit and veggie shops or stands and buy whatever is in season at the time-strawberries, stone fruit, etc. Cherries are my absolute favorite, but I’m game for any New Zealand grown fruit!
