Did you know chocolate is a vegetable? That’s right. Explaining her recent study results, which showed that people who get a daily dose of chocolate are slimmer than those who don’t, Beatrice Golomb, an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego said, “It’s my favorite vegetable.” Dr. Golomb More >

A few weeks ago I noticed someone posted on a picky eater dilemma on Facebook–when you give your kids a smoothie spiked with spinach, do you tell ‘em about it…especially if they’re liking said smoothie packed with one of nature’s premiere superfoods? Full disclosure: I love, love spinach. Regular lettuce has no heft and doesn’t More >

Five ingredients. One prep time. Three meals. What does it add up to? Easy baked ziti. I make a big batch of baked ziti one night that fills one, 9 x 13″ pan (for dinner that night and leftovers the next), then I fill a 9×9″ aluminum foil pan that I freeze and save to More >

This Friday is Mexican Independence Day. Don’t confuse Independence Day with Cinco de Mayo (literally the 5th of May, which is more of an American holiday). To celebrate, I wanted to pass along some of my favorite Mexican dishes this week. That brings me to tostadas. It seems like tostadas are often thought of as More >

Lean, flat flank steak is a quick-cooking meat that’s perfect for weekday dinners or jazzed up with fixins’ for weekend meals. This recipe takes a little planning ahead: you rub a flavorful paste into the meat the night before you plan on grilling. (I usually make two at the same time—one for dinner that night, More >

I have a weakness for a good salad. My favorites have strong flavors that play off each other with hints of sweetness, sourness (without being bitter) and crunch. This salad has it all–plus it’s easy to put together. Sure, I’d love to take credit for coming up with the combo, but that goes to a More >

It’s polyjuice potion time! What’s great about this magical concoction is…get this..it can be any color you want. Yup, before putting together my brew I checked on Harry Potter wikia and the color of the juice changes based on the person you want to become (dutiful HP readers would remember this). Gregory Goyle and Bellatrix More >

As promised, these muffins are moist, rich and full of good-for-you ingredients. A few things: first, yes, you can substitute soured milk (milk + fresh lemon juice) for the buttermilk, but I wouldn’t. Real buttermilk makes a big difference. Next, golden raisins rock. Forget the drier, regular variety and go for something chewier. Finally, this More >

Yes, these are little flowers made out of carrots, zucchini, green onions and bean sprouts. While I’d love to say that this was all a terribly creative tactic to get my kids to eat healthier, well, it’s not really. I just think it’s fun. My kids do too. But hey, that’s not to say they More >

Honey and agave are my go-to sweeteners in dressing. I like the texture it gives to the sauce.

You might try Greek yogurt. Lately I’ve been mixing half regular dressing and half Greek yogurt in salad dressings–so tasty. I’ve tried it with Greek vinaigrette but not this recipe. Now I will.

Love baby spinach, but never seem to use it much as a salad. Thanks for the reminder!

I’ve been going through baby spinach like you wouldn’t believe right now–my daughter and I are hooked on protein shakes and spinach is one of our main ingredients.

What do you think of using a Granny Smith organic apple instead?

I’m not much on sweet dressings, but I’d go for this with a non-sweet vinaigrette.

What a healthy salad that sounds super yummy. I love apple slices in a salad. And adding a little honey sounds like a good idea – I wouldn’t have thought of using that ingredient.
