It’s been awhile since I’ve been awake all night with a fussy baby. These days when my “baby” can’t sleep, usually because of a thunderstorm, she’ll curl up in her doorway in her favorite blanket and I’ll find her there dozing in the morning.
When I flipped through my review copy of Parent Needs to Eat Too by Debbie Koenig (it came out today!) it brought back so many memories of harried days trying to keep my baby–and toddlers–happy and occupied while I tried to turn out a meal that involved more than flakes, a bowl, and milk.
Koenig understands the often daunting task of wanting to have good food for your family and holding on to your sanity at the same time, especially when you’re a new parent. The cookbook draws on her own experiences as a new mom and is divided into handy sections on meals to make while your kids nap, last-minute dinner ideas, good-for-you snacks, a whole section on slow cookers (I’ve already dog-eared that chapter) and cooking tips sprinkled throughout.
What surprised me about that book is that Koenig doesn’t shy away from flavor or dishes from around the world. Tucked in the pages you’ll find Polynesian flank steak, fish nicoise, Indian potatoes, soba noodle salad with tahini-lime dressing. And two. Count ‘em two recipes for homemade black beans. Sure, I won’t need the sidebars on how to make these dishes into baby food (well, maybe the next time they tighten my tween’s braces). But I thought the tips, tricks, and recipes in the cookbook work well for parents like me who may not have a baby in the house, yet we’re still trying to make good food for our kids between laundry, work, sports practices, piano lessons, field trips…

But before I get to the giveaway, I wanted to share a share a few details about what makes these cutting boards so special.
The boards started as a way to recycle scraps leftover from Ralph Teets’ woodworking business based in Girard, Ohio. After crafting furniture, cabinets, and clocks, Teets often had ends leftover that he just couldn’t bear to throw away. Instead, he started making cutting boards as gifts for friends and with his wife Joanne’s encouragement he started selling them online at Cutting Board Art and at craft shows.
A good, hardwood cutting board, explained Teets, can be something for you to pass down to your kids–and grandkids. Like cast iron cookware, if you take care of hardwood, it lasts. And lasts.
Here are Teets’ suggestions for keeping your cutting boards in tip-top shape:
Don’t put the board in the dishwasher. Ditto with submerging it, or soaking it, in water.
Do go ahead and rinse the board with water and a mild antibacterial soap to clean.
Don’t use the board in a microwave or oven.
Do condition the board with butcher block oil.

From simple tweaks like orange-zested cranberry relish to curiosities like turducken (you know, the chicken stuffed into a duck tucked inside a turkey creation invention that peaked in popularity a few years ago), there’s been a trend toward mixing up classic Thanksgiving fare.
I like it.
Seems like reworking dishes is the tradition—I mean, someone thought, “Hey, I bet these yams would taste better with marshmallows on them.” And now in kitchens everywhere come November 25th there’s grandmother’s lonely yam dish on the corner of the buffet, untouched.
Or, there’s the brilliant baker who thought to throw some crisp-friend onions on top of the green beans. Bless her!
So what tweaks are you planning this year?
I’ve been thumbing through ideas at the Mixing Bowl, a cooking forum sponsored by Better Homes Gardens. I found this recipe for the green bean bake using one of my favorite ingredients, bacon. And a whole group discussion dedicated to stuffing.
Here’s what I’m thinking:
-Instead of just my regular dinner rolls, I’m adding fresh herbs into the roll for parsley and basil-infused crescents. They’re beautiful and make the buttery rolls stand out more on the buffet spread.
-Mashed potatoes—how about in lilac? I’m stocking up on purple potatoes to whip up with plenty of real butter. I’m saving the pumpkin for cookies and making a chocolate-raspberry truffle cheesecake for dessert (recipe to come Thursday:).
-Forget iceberg or even romaine lettuce, what about a Southern-style inspired kumquat salad? That sounds good too.

Apples are my idea of a perfect school snack–a medium-sized, crisp Empire apple. But I know that apples will only appeal (no pun intended:) to my kids so many days in a row and then I’ve got to get creative. I’ve been looking around for easy, healthy school snack options and Revolution Foods has some that may be just right. I haven’t sampled Revolution Foods’ line yet, instead I’m going to rely on one lucky MKES reader to do it for me.
